If you’ll be out and about this weekend to celebrate the 4th of July, it’s important to wear a face mask anywhere social distancing isn’t possible – the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says masks are crucial to slowing the spread of COVID-19. So – why not get patriotic while you’re at it?
Tip #1 – Use an old shirt
If you have an old, white T-shirt around the house, break out the crafts! Use markers to color it with red, white, and blue designs, write a message, or draw a happy face. Be sure to measure beforehand so you know it will fit your face – here is how the CDC recommends making a face mask out of a shirt:
Tip #2 – Use a bandana
Lots of retailers sell festive bandanas and similar clothes this time of year – and it’s so easy to turn it into a mask! The only materials you need are things you already have in the house:
Tip #3: Show off those sewing skills
If you have a sewing machine or know how to sew, now is the time to put those skills to use! You can use a T-shirt, bandana, or any other comfortable cloth – cotton is recommended.
All you need is: two 10”x6” pieces of fabric, two 6” elastic ties, a needle and thread, scissors, and a sewing machine.
There you have it! With things you already have at home, you can make your family some festive face masks to celebrate July 4th. As a reminder, the CDC says face masks should not be worn by children under 2, people who have trouble breathing, and people who are unconscious or incapacitated. Have a happy 4th of July and stay safe!
